Hit The Docks For Winter Crappie Fishing

By Billy B. Desroleaux

Catching Crappies in the Winter thru early Spring can be difficult. You may be on the lake one day and can't do nothing wrong. Get up early and go the next day and go fish the same locations with the same bait and you can't buy a Crappie! Another factor is fishing for Crappie in the Winter thru early Spring is the Weather. One minute it can be pleasant. Within a few minutes it can turn deadly as an approaching front blows in without warning. But there is hope for us die hard Crappie fishermen. It's docks and I'll show you how to find and catch Crappie in the Fall and Winter around boat docks.

The most challenging aspect of catching Crappie in the Winter|Fall and Winter|Winter thru early Spring|late Fall through early Spring|Winter time is usually the weather. Weather during Winter|Fall and Winter|Winter thru early Spring|late Fall through early Spring|Winter time can be downright upredictable. Bright, calm and sunny one minute and the next you're dealing with cloudy skies and tropical storm force winds out of the North as a front blows in.

There is one place where Crappie fishermen can go to get out of the weather and have a reasonable chance at catching enough slabs for a fish fry. These places are boat docks. But not any ole boat dock will work. We're looking for boat docks that have Crappie beneath them! This is sometimes easier said than done. But with a little practice and a little research, you can learn how to find the best boat docks for Winter Crappie.

The easiest way to find Crappie holding boat docks in Winter is too look for Marina's that have boat slips that hold large power boats and sail boats. These boats need deep water to navigate. It's not uncommon to find slips over the edges of river and creek channels. This is where you'll want to concentrate your efforts at.

Once you've found a Marina near deep water, with docks near or over drop offs, the next step is to find out what the Crappie want to bite. I use small minnows to begin with to find where the Crappie are holding. Some days, they're suspended halfway between the brush and surface. Other days they'll be holding tight to the brush. On the rare warm days, I've even found them in less than two fee of water.

You can either continue to catch Crappie with minnows or switch to a tube jig should the action heat up. I like to use tiny tube jigs in the 1/32 ounce range. If you find Crappie holding a certain pattern under one slip, you'll find them holding the same pattern beneath other slips.

Some Marina's now have indoor heated fishing docks. These are great when the weather is fit for neither man nor beast. I've had many a great day fishing for Crappie in a heated dock passing away the time talking to other fishermen. This is also a fun way to introduce Kids to the sport of Crappie fishing!

Just because you don't have a boat or don't want to fight Ole Man Winter is no reason to miss out on Winter Crappie fishing. The action can be just as fast and furious right at the docks! - 16738
